As a thank you to my blog and podcast supporters, I want you to be the first to have access to my upcoming book, “Uniquely You,” available for pre-order now. Here’s your look at the fourth chapter…
Part I: Living in the Dark
When I was growing up, I did not have many role models who could steer me in the right direction. I was in the dark about almost everything, including educational decisions, career opportunities, and even common manners. One story that sticks out to me took place in high school when my then-girlfriend invited me to her house for dinner. Her mom had prepared pork chops. While the rest of the table placed their napkins on their laps and reached for their utensils, I picked the meat up with my hands and started eating it straight off the bone.
Part II: Pork Chops and Candor
I had no idea this was inappropriate—this was how I had always eaten pork chops in my home. The rule was, if it had a bone, use your hands. After dinner, her father, a successful businessperson, kindly pulled me aside to tell me that eating with one’s hands was not appropriate behavior at his table. I was mortified. Even now the memory of that moment makes my stomach turn. But in looking back, I realize that was one of many lessons I had to learn, and I am grateful that he cared enough to teach me.
Many professionals grow exhausted and disenchanted from chasing business gurus and quick-fix formulas. Rather than becoming knock-offs, we must learn to listen to the leadership lessons our lives have been trying to teach us. In “Uniquely You,” coming in May 2019, I will share my personal journey, and how it led me to lead uniquely, with you. Preorder your copy today!
